Preface In November, 1965, I delivered the first three of these lectures at the invitation of the University of Mysore. As they proposed to publish them, I thought it might be useful to add a fourth on Muhammadan law, which had already been published by the Gujarat University.

I acknowledge gratefully the kindness and courtesy of the University of Mysore, and am grateful to the Gujarat University for their permission to reprint the last lecture.

Without being a formal introduction to the Middle East, these lectures, brief and in complete as they are, may yet help create an interest in a region so close, historically and culturally, to India.
