Kalidasa Bibliography (An Old and Rare Book)

About the Book Discussion of Kalidasa have been continuing for the last several centuries, as a result of which so many commentaries, translations, criticalanaly sis of his drama & poetry, all aspects of Kalidasa's life and literature have come up. But a collection of the information regarding all such works was yet to come.

The present work KALIDASA BIBLIOGRAPHY (Part-I, Telugu literature) is a chronologically arranged index of such books and papers writ ten in Telugu language from 1870 to 1991, which were scattered in differ ent places and different Research journals.

This is a first attempt and we do not claim it to be an exhaustive list and we shall try to enrich the information time to time. However even at the present stage, this work must be of immense help for the researcher of Kalidasa study in general and Kalidasa criticism in Telugu literature in particular.

Preface It is a matter of few years ago when I was newly appointed in the Kalidasa Akademi. At that time a letter was received from a Research Scholar who wanted to be informed which poem of Kalidasa was translated for the first time in a foreign language, when and in which language. It was very natural for the scholar to have expected reply from an Akademi which was established in the name of Kalidasa. I felt myself in a fix as to what reply could have I given him as the referential materials were not available. This inculcated. inspiration in my mind to start working in this direction. The result is this small book which I am presenting before you.

Within a century, or say between 1870 to 1991 as far as I could trace, much work has been done on Kalidasa and his literature in Telugu language in the form of books, dramas, poetry, commentaries, translations of which have also appeared in various renowned magazines and New year Numbers of news papers. On the basis of the material gathered by me from essays, poems, writing etc, I have compiled the information in chronological order. As regards books, I have tried to give firstly the name of the book, its author, and the year of publication. Where it was possible, name of the publisher or the Institution has also been added. In the case of published research-papers, poems, commentaries etc., I have given preference first to their heading, name of the writer, magazine or New Year Numbers of news paper in order of the month and year of their publication. The Akademi is now committed to compile information regarding works done on Kalidasa in various Indian and Inter-national languages and to edit them in the form of a book.
