About the Author

S.V. Krishnamurthy (S.V.K.) has been a member on the editorial staff of THE HINDU for over 40 years. He is felicitous in both English and Tamil. His creative talents have resulted in many short stories in Tamil which have been published in leading Tamil magazines like Ananda Vikatan, Kalki and Dinamani Kadir. Equally entertaining in English, his humorous skits carried in THE HINDU, Sunday weekly magazine section drew much appreciation from the reading public. It was fortunate that he had in his father S.V.V. a model, who was a humorist par excellence of his time. The good sense of humour with which he has woven his essays on the common attitude and tastes of people in everyday life runs in his blood as a paternal gift.
S.V.K. was born on 17.09.1925 and he spent the best part of his life as a professional journalist. He is also a good musician, a devoted votary of the Trinity of Carnatic music. He has to his credit four volumes on Thyagaraja "Know Your Thyagaraja".
Many of his humorous skits in English and short stories in Tamil have been published in book forms. After the retirement from THE HINDU he continues to write about music and musicians, which are also being brought out in book form..

Preface

It was the late Mr. S. Parthasarathy (endearingly called Papa) who, as the Editor of The Hindu Sunday Weekly magazine section, encouraged me to write humorous skits on the lines of my father S.V.V. and good naturedly smiled at the pieces as I handed them over to him one after another. His generous appreciation by publishing them in "The Hindu tickled my vanity and put me on to further efforts. I am deeply obliged to him and to this day I gratefully remember his broad-mindedness in asking a junior member of The Hindu staff, as I was then, to contribute to the prestigious paper. But for him this thin volume I am presenting to the readers would never have come to pass and I would have been blissfully ignorant of some talent in me to weave humorous reflections on the humdrum life around us. The life style commented upon in these essays was that prevailing some three decades ago.
My thanks are to The Alliance Company, who offered to tag on the publication of this small book with that of my father S.V.V'S works in English and Tamil.
