Magnificent Makhna

After Black Panther, Aravind Krish Bala brings to readers another dramatic story from the Western Ghats. It is about a tusk less elephant, referred to as makhna, which is believed to have protected the forests from poachers and timber. traders for many years. In fact, it became such a legend that many people still display its photograph on the walls of their homes.

The other hero in the story is an official of the Tamilnadu Forest Department who has rescued many tigers and leopards from human habitats and returned them to the safety of the forests. When Aravind Krish Bala first brought back stories and pictures from the forests for his daughter, Spatika, she thought her father owned the forests. Now, after listening to his many stories, she knows they belong to the wild animals. Aravind used to be a teacher, and is now a journalist writing on environment, wildlife and conservation.
