My Dear Master

Helene Meyer-Franck was Rabindranath Tagore's most dedicated German translator. This work of translation led her and her husband, Heinrich Mey-er-Benfey, to engage in a correspondence with their "dear Master" which lasted eighteen years (1920-1938). Against the background of Germany's troubled period between the two world wars, we witness their meetings in Hamburg and Berlin and their struggle to spread the message of good-will and peace through Rabindranath's writings. This is the only extensive correspondence the Poet had with a German and one of t most moving and revealing exchanges he had with any intellectual in the West.
