Book Description

Back of The Book

Of all the various genres in Literature, prison writing has been one of the most popular throughout the world, especially in India. Some of the most exquisite writings from Indian leaders have come from their prison experiences. Be it Mahatma Gandhi or Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh or Jaiprakash Narayan, they have written their best works within the confines of prison. All writing whether it is in prison or outside is done in solitude and so the walls of prison become invisible. But in the writings of some in prison we witness the anger and outrage of a rebel whose wings are tied. It is interesting to see in the present collection, how this aspect has been explored by scholars and in the process the discovery of another section of writers who have preserved their poise and transcended the challenges of prison.
