Book Description
This book is about the description of six seasons by Kālidāsa. How the summer season's effect is allayed by women with their love, how the heat of the sun affects travellers, animals and the beauty of the moon in the summer evening depicted beautifully.
The joy in rainy season is described by the dance of peacocks, clouds, blossming flowers, pain of separation of traveller's wives very beautifully.
Full-of-flowers earth, singing of swans, grown up crops, cool breeze, make-up by women, travellers yearning to meet their loved ones are some of the descriptions of autumn season.
In preparing the present edition of the Ṛtusamhara the particular requirements of University students have been kept in view; but it is hoped that nothing that is of interest to the general reader has been omitted. The Bombay text in six Cantos and 144 verses has been adopted as being the one most generally received; all extra verses found in Mss. and printed copies have been thrown together is an appendix at the end. In settling the text I have chosen what readings seemed to suit best; the frequent discussions about variants given in the notes may serve to induce in the student a habit of thinking for himself. The notes had to be done page by page of the com., as the edition was undertaken on the Sastri's intimating to me that he would be able to begin and finish the com. in May and not earlier than that; and yet I trust no serious discrepancies have been allowed to remain between the com. and the notes. A full index of the more important words in the text has been added at the end.
