Preface

Materials and processes, needless to say, form the backbone of any engineering system. The importance and significance need not be emphasized when it comes to aerospace systems. India is witnessing steady progress and success in the area of aero materials, aeronautics and aerospace. Our country, in particular, has more challenging situa tions in terms of variety in combat aircraft, acquisition of numerous manufacturing technologies and diverse territories of varying environments in severity and the like.

Foreword

During the early part of my professional career in HAL in the Design & Development department, an important assignment was to teach the newly recruited design and management trainee engineers the subject of aircraft materials and processes. The only textbook available at that time was 'Aircraft Materials & Processes' by G.F. Titterton. This book was published in 1941 and covered in detail the then used various types of materials such as wood, fabrics, plastics, glass, steel & light alloys for aircraft structures.
