Anandavardhana, universally acclaimed as the most outstanding and influential critic in India flourished in Kashmir in the second half of the ninth century under the patronage of king Avantivarman. His epoch making work the Dhvanyaloka set the proper foundation for literary criticism and inspired all later poets and critics. The monograph in seven chapters gives a detailed study on Anandavardhana's life and works; his status as the dhvani-theory; vyanjana-the language of poetry; and some concepts like pratibha, sahridaya, aucitya, alamkara, sanghatana, gunibhuta, vyangya etc.

About the Author:

The author Dr. Kunjunni (b. 1920) is a profound scholar in Sanskrit and a prolific writer in Malayalam and English. He has served as professor of Sanskrit in Madras University. A Senior Fellow, Dravidian Linguistic Association; Dr. Kunjunni Raja has more than 20 publications in Malayalam, more than 80 essays in English to his credit. He has edited New Catalogorum for Madras University. His much appreciated work is Contribution of Kerala to Sanskrit Literature and Indian Theories of Meaning. He has served as Honorary Director, Adyar Library & Research Centre, Madras.
