Preface

The titanic and complex personality of the great Mughal is not easy to portray. We have contemporary portraits of the emperor one from the pen of the writers or historians and other from the brush of his court artists.

The Mughal emperors were keen lovers of nature and art. And their personality was reflected in the art and culture of their times. The Mughal dynasty in the India was founded by Babur in 1526 A.D. Babur's Indian sojourn of four years until his untimely death in 1530 A.D. appears to be too brief to leave any lasting legacy. The state of uncertainty in the days of Babur and Humayun was not, however, favourable, for any outstanding contribution to the development of art and culture. But the beginning of a new brush-work was started under Humayun when he was in exile.
