He was the first from Karnataka state to recive National Award for Ayurveda and The first to received Doctrate from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science Bangalore is the author of 46 books and two books are translated into Russian language and one to Spanish language. He is noted Ayurveda Physician of repute.
Modern medicine consists mostly of antibiotics and chemo-therapeuatic drugs, which are employed to kill the bacterias responsible for production of diseases. These drugs kill not only pathogenic becterias but also becterial flora which is considered essential for the maintence of health and longevity. Moreover, their prolonged use makes the pathogenic becterias resistant to these drugs. They also produce serious side-effects and interfere with the metabolic process of the body, causing more and more diseases, and producing various types of allergic reactions.
Thus, there is an urgent necessity for an alternative and effective system of medicine, which not only cures discases, but also preserves and promotes health. In this field, Ayurveda continues to play a promiment role. It increases the resistance of the patient without producing any side effects.
The diseases discussed in the book are given their allopathic names, so that those conversant with the terminology of modern medicine can easily follow the line of Ayurvedic treatment.
The book mentions the causes and symptoms of diseases according to Ayurveda and prescribes the treatment for them. Most of the drugs used are home remedies which are within the reach of everybody. Standard Ayurvedic preparations manufactured by drug companies are also given.
The book is written mainly for the laymean, as well as foreigners and practitioners of different systems of medicine like Allopathy, Ayurveda and Unani. It is beyond the scope of this book to give descriptions and procedures of manufacture of the drugs mentioned in the book. Most of the common idseases are dealt with in the book and their treatment given along with diet and regimen.
I am happy to go through this valuable book on Ayurveda; entitled Ayurvedic Remedies for Common Diseases, written by Dr. T.L. Devaraj.
Dr. Devaraj is a scholar in Ayurveda who has gained wide popularity not only as an Ayurvedic physician but also as a writer of books on Ayurveda. His book, The Panchakarma Treatment of Ayurveda in English and Panchakarma Chikitsa Vijnana in two volumes in Kannada, won him appreciation from many authorities on Ayurveda. He has got many firsts to his credit. He has also writer a book. The Health and Family Welfare in Ayurveda, and a booklet on family planning in ancient India, both in Kannada. These books are the first of their kind in the English and Kannada languages. His book, Mane Maddu (home remedies) in Kannada has received appreciation not only from Ayurvedic physicians but also from the Karnataka Government which has sanctioned for it a token grant of Rs. 2,000.
Dr. Devaraj has published several research papers on Ayurveda. His great works have won appreciation from eminent scholars of Ayurveda. He was honoured by His Holiness Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt, Karnataka State, for his outstanding contribution to Ayurveda.
In the present work, Dr. Devaraj has tried to prescribe Ayurvedic remedies for diseases of which allopathic names are mentioned. It is easy for the common reader to follow the Ayurvedic line of treatment as most of the medicines required are easily available and have no side-effects. Even to today, there are disceases like jaundice, rheumatism, skin infections, etc., which require only Ayurvedic treatment for a complete care . India is proud of this system of medicine which has been rejuvenated since the dawn of Independence.
The author has also recommended diet and regimen to be followed during treartment.
Photographs of plants (drugs) given in the book will help the readers to identify and use them.
The book is useful for the layman as well as medical pracittioner and foreigners interested in Ayurveda.
