Bhaunri (A Novel)

At the sound of his footsteps, she turned and watched him approach. Bheema bent and picked up the lota. He put the piece of jaggery in his mouth and drank the water. He had taken off his shirt, and his wrestler's body glowed pale in the blue shade of the tree. She felt there was a large magnet right at the centre of Bheema's chest which drew her like a bit of iron. She stretched her hand and touched the angle where the column of his neck joined his broad shoulder, and let her fingers trail on to his chest. Bheema set the lota down. 'Chhori...' He held her wrist. "My name is Bhaunri,' she said.

Anukrti Upadhyay has postgraduate degrees in management and literature, and a graduate degree in law. She writes in both English and Hindi, Daura and Bhaunri are her first publications in English. In her other life, she worked in a global investment bank as a compliance and risk officer. She divides her time between Mumbai and Singapore.
