Book Description

About The Book

The book on Biopesticides contains 16 chapters which has been described thoroughly on different aspects of biological control of plant diseases and tried to cover the topic as per the restructured and revised syllabi of Post Graduate programme of Agriculture and Allied Sciences. Attempts have been made to collect and compile the information, published literatures: and more particularly practical experiences on biological control of plant pathogens, insects pests and invasive weeds. This book willfulfil the needs of PG, UG students, vocational trainers, researchers and teachers of Plant Pathology, Krishi Vigyan Kendra's etc. This book includes the concepts, objectives, Importance, classification of biological control and Biopesticides, principles of plant disease management in Bio agents, essential characteristics of an effective biocontrolagents, merits anddemerits of Biopesticides, compatibility of different biocontrol agents, characterization of fungal biocontrol agents, factors governing biological control, role of physical environment, agroecosystem, operational mechanisms and cultural practices in biological control, method of application, types of commercial biopesticides, biopesticides industry in India. Information on market estimate of global biopesticide market, future prospects of biopesticide industry, quality control of biocontrol agent/biopesticides, application and monitoring of biocontrol agent, registration of biopesticides, biological control of invasive alien species (IAS), protection of biopesticides under the IPR regime, VAM: its isolation, mass multiplication and their use for management plant parasitic nematodes andnanotechnology application in biocontrol etc are also explained in details in this book.

Preface

Biopesticides are microbe based pesticides that can be effectively used for the better plant health management without any damage to the environment. Biopesticides are also proves to be an important component of biointensive pests and disease management strategies. Besides, biopesticides have emerged as an inevitable component in the present day agriculture in the context of worldwide importance of organic farming. Knowledge on biopesticides become inevitable for the environmentalist, agriculturists, sustainable production system and many more.

In this book an attempts has been made to collect and compile the informations, published literature and more particularly practical experiences on biological control of plant pathogens, insects pests and invasive weeds. Inputs of students and teachers and author's own experience for over one decade of UG and PG teaching, research and field extension has helped in writing this book. This book has been written to fulfill the needs of PG, UG students, vocational trainers, researchers and teachers of plant pathology, Krishi Vigyan Kendra etc. The author tried to acknowledge the sources of information but unintentionally if any copyright materials has not been acknowledged it is requested to let it know for its rectification.

The author express his sincere thanks to the authorities of Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, Assam for their cooperation and providing facilities.

The encouragement, guidance received from Prof A. N. Mukhopadhyay Former Vice Chancellor of AAU, Former Director General, TRA; Prof K. C. Puzari, Former Head, Department of Plant Pathology of AAU; Dr. L.K. Hazarika, Former Dean, AAU, Jorhat, Dr. A. Bhattacharyya, Director of Research (Agri) AAU, Jorhat; Dr. B. C. Das, Principal Scientist, AAU; Dr. P. S. Nath, Former Head, Department of Plant Pathology, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani for their timely creative suggestions and interest shown in the book. The author duly acknowledge the help received from Dr. M. S. Ali, Rtd. Professor and Head, Department of Plant Pathology, AAU, Jorhat for the Chapter on Morphology and also thank Dr. B. Mahanta and Dr. A. Borah, Professors of Department of Nematology, AAU, Jorhat for the Chapter on VAM. Dr. Dutta acknowledges his research students and colleagues and as a whole who inspired much to write this book.

Introduction

India is the second largest country in the world in terms of population, due to this reason the demand of food is more as compared to supply. To solve this problem farmers are growing crops throughout the year but they use synthetic pesticides in large amount to minimize the pests attack and get more yield, but this synthetic pesticide have numbers of bad affects. To minimize this problem, Biological control agents and Biopesticide is a good alternate option. Biological control using biopesticides have emerged as an inevitable component in the present day agricultural system in the context of worldwide importance of organic and sustainable farming. Under such situations, microbial antagonists and natural enemies (predator, parasitoid and pathogen), botanicals, plant incorporated protein etc. plays a vital role for their utilization in the system biological management, for sustaining soil and plant health management.
