About The Book

The Church of Great Britain, using the word in its widest acceptation,at all adequately heard or acted upon the call to go over and help India?Taking India as a whole, the Church of Christ is in contact chiefly with three great groups of peoples-the Hindus, the Mohammedans and the Depressed classes. It is common knowledge that the last group is very accessible to Christian teaching.
Both the Hindu and Moslem religions are peculiarly resistant to the impact of Christianity. This is well known. For the continued presentation of Christianity to Hindus and Moslems there is no more potent agency than the work of Medical Missions
For the very beginning we have to go back to the year 1854, when the late Rev Robert Clark, a true missionary statesman, made an extended tour in the Mountain Kingdom. It was not until the spring of 1864 that Mr.Clark really opened his campaign and started regular work in the Valley of Kashmir. This was done under circumstances of extreme difficulty. In 1879 Dr.Downes had at record of just under 5000 patients, with a considerable number of important operations, and during that year her admitted 703 inpatients.
Dr Downes, whose health had been shattered by overwork, was succeeded by Dr. Arthur Neve, who remained in charge for more than a third of a century.
