Preface

Indian 'medicine is one of the oldest medical, faculty on this planet. Our Krishis and Maharashis have given great contribution for providing social as well as personal health according to materials and methods available in ancient time. The disease Diabetes Mellitus or Madhumeha is being described in almost all available texts of Ayurveda under the title of Prameha/Madhumeha.

In modern machinised age Diabetes Mellitus has become a major problem commonly in socio-economically improved society of India. Though the advanced facilities of modern medical sciences are available for its control, no perfect line of treatment or permanent cure is possible. Some Ayurvedic preparations along with metallic compounds have shown encouraging results in the management of the disease. The results of the same cannot be assessed untill and unless the study of its principles as stated in Samhitas of Ayurvedas should be propogated in detail in the light of modern medical science. Hence to explain the efficiency of basic principles of diabetic treatment the whole book is written.

I have tried to explain the facts regarding the disease on the basis of original texts of Indian Medicine and that of modern medicine compositely. It has been also tried to explain effectiveness of certain herbal medicines described in Ayurveda in day-to-day practice of modern diabetology. Number of basic principles like Tridosha theory, Saptadhatu theory, Panchamahabhuta theory. Theory of similarity and insimilarity, Diet, Drugs, Yogasana, Exercise, Agni etc. are described in connection with Diabetes Mellitus. The principal treatment of the disease and the principles regarding the selection of various pharmacological agents suggested in this book may be useful for the evolution of herbal anti-diabetic compounds in future.

Many indegenous drugs of repute have been introduced in Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia some of which have already established their claim by scientific investigations and therapeutic trials. Many of them require further work on scientific lines to establish their claim in the management of diabetes mellitus. In corporation of the drugs of Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia will act as a stimulus for further investigations and work has already been taken up in different institutions.

In the preparation of this book I have consulted and have taken full advantage of most standard works on the subject. And acknowledges greatfully to pandit Shivkaran Sharma Chhangani, Director, All India Ayurveda Research Institute, Nagpur who is my guide for Ph.D. study on the same subject. I am also thankful to Dr. S.B.Mishra Ph.D., Head of Dept. of Sharirkriya, Shri Ayurveda College and Hospital, Nagpur. I am also thankful to Ravi Barapatre and Mr. Sandip Rakhunde of unitech computers, for giving great help in typing this book. I am also thankful to my family members for their encouragements in preparing this book. I acknowledge greatfully all the authors for the help received for making this book. I am also thankful to Chaukhambha Orientalia Publication for giving me a chance to serve Ayurvedic literature.

I may mention that a book of this nature can not be perfect and I am fully conscious of its shortcomings. It is possible that many errors have crept in all of which are not typographical only. I hope to rectify in the next edition if my friends will be good enough to point them out. Lastly I may hope that anyone who wants to know about Ayurvedic remedy in Diabetes will find this book very useful and informative. Also I am sure this comprehensive book on "Diabetes Mellitus In Indian Medicine", written in a very simple and easy language will be a great advantage to the patiants, health conscious doctors and students alike.
