Book Description

About The Book

Shakuvada of Gadadhara Bhattacharya is one of the textbooks widely studied in Navya Nyaya Tradition. It deals with the basic conveying power of words that is called "Shakti". According to the theory of Nyaya, Shakti is nothing but convention that plays major role in conveying the meaning of a word. The role and nature of power of words and its place in the process of shabbdabodha are discussed in the first chapter of this work. In the second of part the work, semantics of some unique nouns like cow etc., pronouns like All, Some, This, ctc, reflexives like slef etc, are discussed in detail.
This work is critically edited by Dr.Shrinvasa Varakhedi and Dr. Veeranarayana Pandurangi in consultation with many published books and manuscripts. A summary of the whole work is given in lucid Sanskrit for the benefit of students. This edition is the first publication in the Nyaya Text Series planned by both the scholars.

Preface

It gives me a great satisfaction that our much anticipated wish to start a Nyaya-Text Series has begun with this critical edition of Shaktivada of Gadadhara Bhattacharya. Way back to 2004, when I myself and my old academic associate and close friend Dr.Veeranarayana Pandurangi were jointly working for newly opened Shabdabodha Department at Rashtriya Sanskrit University, Tirupati, we felt that there is a great need for bring ing out the insights from the Nyaya texts on Shabdabodha domain such as Shaktivada, Vutapttivada etc., for the benefit of Shastric Students and other modern semanticians as well. For this initially we should try to prepare proper texts along with available commentaries on such works. Though an encyclopedic type of work - namely - Shabdabodha Meemamsaa is prepared by Prof. N.S.R.Tatacharya, it is not accessible to all with little ef fort. It requires a rigorous training in Shastras. For, this work contains the original texts with out any interpretation. In that direction, we have a long plan to bring out good editions of Nyaya Shabdabodha texts with a gist in Sanskrit that captures the whole idea presented in the text. This is the first result in this endeavor which will be followed by another edition of Shak tivada with five commentaries. In the similar way we have taken a project. in hand, which is aimed at publishing many Nyaya texts viz., Tarkasan graha Sarvasvam, Tarkasangraha Shabdabodha etc. In future we will also try to publish value added books with a detailed summary even in English using appropriate symbol language.
I thank Dr. Veeranarayana Pandurangi, who is my academic compan ion from student days for his help in bringing out this edition. I also thank Mr. Shrinivasa Guttal Vedagarbha, Bangalore for his painstaking efforts in giving a shape to this text as a press draft using Xelatex Technology.
I also thank Prof. Radha Vallabh Tripathi ji, Honorable Vice Chan cellor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and Prof. T.Tirupati Rao, Honorable EDIT Vice Chancellor, Osmania University for their support. I also thank Sri CS Kanniyal ji and other authorities of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and Osmania University for their kind assistance.
My sincere thanks are due to Dr. Subrahmanyam my colleague, the Di rector of University press and Karshak Printers Itd for their help in printing process.
