About the Author

DORI CHEN-KYO TSHERING (City), civil servant academic, historian and multi- disciplinary scholar was born on 11 June 1949 at Uma, Bhutan. He received his early education in Bhutan as a novice. He then went to India and studied in SUMI, Kalimpong; St. Augustine’s School, Kalimpong; St. Paul’s School, Darjeeling; St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta and eventually he obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy at the Magadh University, Bodhgaya, India. Dr. Dorji also studied public administration and public policy in London School of Economics & Political Science, U.K. He joined Bhutan Civil Service in 1968 and served in various positions. He participated in many international conferences and presented papers on-varied subjects. He authored History of Bhutan based on Buddhism (1994), A Political and Religious History of Bhutan from 1651 to 1906 (1995), A Brief History of Bhutan (1996), Blue Annals of' Bhutan (1997), . An Introduction to Bhutanese Languages (1997) and Administrative Training in Developing Countries (19,98). He is corporate member of: Association of Cost & Executive Accountants (London), Institute of Translation and Interpreting (London), The Chartered Institute of Transport (UK), Indian Institute of Road Transport (Mumbai) and International Network of -Engaged Buddhists (Bangkok). He is member of Book Review Committee, Education Division, Ministry of Health & Education and Dzongkha Dictionary Review Committee, Dzongkha Development Commission, Royal Government of Bhutan. Dr. Dorji was conferred with an honorary appointment to the Research Board of Advisors, the American Biographical Institute, North Carolina, USA and Advisory CounciI, International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England in 1996 and 1997 respectively. He received teachings and initiations from many high Lamas of Mahayana Buddhism. He visited _all places of Buddhist pilgrimage in .India, Nepal and Bhutan. Finally, he was ordained as a Theravada Buddhist monk on 19 August B.E. 2541 (1998) at Wat Somanas Vihara, Bangkok co-sponsored by The World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) and' Pol. Lt. Col. Wanna Chulnurak and his wife Prabha Chulnurak. The Most Ven'ble Phra Tepvisuddhikavi, Lord Abbot of Wat Somanas Vihara was his Preceptor (Upajjhaya) who christened him as Pannavajiro Bhikkhu in Pali language. Since then he has been observing 8 Precepts (Atthangasila) and doing meditation practice daily.

Presently, Dr. Dorji alias Phra Pannavajiro is Joint Director .and Chief Research Officer in the National Museum of Bhutan at Paro.
