Book Description

Preface

All the papers in this volume were read at the seminar on "The Impact of Marxism on Indian Life and Literature" held on the 24th and 25th April 1971. The seminar was organised by the Institute of Kannada Studies, University of Mysore, on the occasion of the Birth Centenary Celebrations of Lenin. This was the second National Seminar organised by the Institute. The First Seminar was on "Gandhiji in Indian Literature" held during the Birth Centenary year of Mahatma Gandhiji, and its proceedings have already been published.
Together these papers give an account of at least some aspects of the great impact of Marxism on our national life and literature. Such an account cannot be found elsewhere without an extensive study of the numerous sources which are not easily available. One or two papers here may not look relevant to the title of the seminar. But. I am sure, they will provide the necessary background to the central theme. My thanks are due to the contributors who, except Justice Krishna Iyer, were present at the seminar also.
I am very grateful to the University Grants Commission and the authorities of the University of Mysore for making the Semi nar and the publication of these papers possible. I am deeply grateful to Prof. D. Javare Gowda, our Vice-Chancellor, for the guidance and encouragement I have received from him. He has been our Vice-Chancellor for the past three years. During this period, he has created an atmosphere of intellectual life in the University to a great extent. He has given maximum freedom and encouragement to the departments. These opportunities, however, are yet to be used properly. Sri D. V Urs has helped me in numerous ways in arranging the seminar and expediting the publication of this volume. His enthusiasm for work has lightened my responsibilities considerably. I thank him sincerely.
