Book Description

Preface

In the middle of 2005 the Chairman of the National Book Trust, Prof Bipan Chandra, invited me to write a book covering various population aspects in a simple manner useful for the general reader. I suggested him the need for two books, one based on 2001 population census data and the other relating to dynamic processes of population change. Prof. Bipan Chandra gladly agreed to my suggestion. NBT was kind enough to publish my first book POPULATION OF INDIA IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM: CENSUS 2001. This book was released by the NBT on 27 December 2006.

The second book covering the dynamic processes of fertility, mortality and migration describes demographic transition in India and in major states. The book starts with an introductory chapter, it then briefly describes in chapter 2 India's population profile. This chapter is mainly the summary of chapters 2, 3 and 4 of Population of India in the New Millennium: Census 2001. Chapter 3 titled as Dynamics of Population Change: Fertility, Mortality and Migration starts with 'information needed to study population dynamics.' It goes on to describe the vital registration system in India, its weaknesses and limitations. To obtain reliable estimates of birth rates, death rates and other fertility and mortality measures the chapter describes the schemes of Sample Registration System, National Family Health Survey and Reproductive and Child Health Survey.
