Book Description

About the Book
The present book exhaustively deals with the origin and development, system of the Upanishads. In brief it propagates the fundamentals of philosophy found in Upanishads. Upanishads are termed as Vedanta. They are the height of Indian culture and philosophy. The book highlights how there is a system in the philosophy of Upanishads. First, there developed the doctrine of Brahaman and Atman giving rise to idealism. When the empirical knowledge asserted them it developed into cosmology or the doctrine of the universe. Idealism slowly gave way to Pantheism, Theism, Atheism and Deism. With the rise of Sankhya developed system Psychology or the doctrine of soul. Side by side with them developed Eschatology or the doctrine of Transmigration and Emancipation, manifested in ways-Yoga and Samnyasa.

Introduction
The present book 'Origin and Development System of the Upanisads' is written by Geden, A.S. The book reflects the hard labour, diligence and deep in probing of the author. The book is written in clear and lucid style. Before coming to the actual discussion of the system of Upanişads, the another has discussed the place, meaning, devision of Upanisads in the introduction part of the book. The Upanisads are often referred and known as Vedanta, hence, the author has discussed the place of Upanisads in the Literature of the Veda. The Vedic literature has been classified into four principal parts corresponding to the four priestly offices at the Soma sacrifice namely Rg, Yajus, Sama and Atharvaveda, each comprising a Samhita, a Brahmana, a sutra. The Brahmana again is further divided into three orders by the exponents of Vedanta, although their contents are closely connected and overlap each other-Vidhi, Arthveda and Vedanta or Upanisad. Aranyakas are the link between Brahmanas and Upanisads. But the separation of the material in all the three is not strictly found. Then the Upanisads of the three Vedas have been mentioned by the author and in his view the case is entirely different with the numerous Upanisads found in the Atharvaveda. The names of the Atharva Upanisads are derived partly from the contents and partly from any accidental circumstance. The author has made five fold classifications of the Upanisads.
