Preface

Ayurveda is the incarnation of and imagination of an ideal health which otherwise could have been a dream. No doubt Ayurvedic medical science has a holistic approach to live disease-free long life. Therefore Ayurveda is gaining wide popularity especially in the western countries. Really speaking in this context Ayurvedic medicines have lion’s share to put Ayurveda at such a global platform among all medical sciences. Although its true that these medicines have great contribution for making Ayurveda one of the best medical science in te world, but these days they have been blamed and questioned for their quality and safety. More or less it may be true but, prima facie, it seems to be intentionally targeted. So it is important to come over these allegations which are very oftenly experienced. To re-establish Ayurveda at the top most position in the medical fraternity spread all over the world is the foremost target or mission. A thoroughly well educated students in Ayurvedic pharmaceutical science (Rasashastra and Bhaishajya-Kalpana) having awareness of the situation can really contribute to a great extent to achieve the above target in a best way.

Therefore it is pertinent to make aware students about the legal status of Ayurvedic medicines especially with respect to the related aspects of Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 (and the Rules thereunder), GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices), etc. The basic fundamental knowledge of some commonly used drug formulations has been discussed at its length.

The need to create general awareness all Ayurvedic (BAMS) students, persons who are involved in this profession or who are keen in this profession was felt since long time. All these ideas and thoughts have been summarized in this book. The present work in the form of book may be useful for all BAMS and MD (Ayu) students, new aspirants entering the vast commercial field of Drug Manufacturing/Pharmacy and all Ayurvedic practioners.
