Book Description

About The Book

This small Treatise Svatma Nirupanam Contains 154 verses, each having two lines. It beings with the adoration of the Guru and an enumeration of the qualifications required of the disciple.

The Atma is distinguished from the five kosas, and thought not perceivable, is not external as it is the Self luminous. The Mahavakya Tattvamasi is explained in statements irrefutable for their logic with the help of illustrations.

The nature of Brahman is dilated upon both in its absolute state and in its relation to the universe. The exuberance of the joy of the disciple who succeeds in realizing the Truth taught by the Guru is conveyed in 40 verses in language peerless for its sweetness and scintillating boldness of nguage peerless for its sweetness and scintillating rhythm and for the boldness of expression in keeping with a state that is beyond anything the mind can comprehend.

Foreword

About 1200 years back Lord Shiva has taken the incarnation of Sri Adi Shankaracharya to protect the Sanatana Dharma. Sitting on the banks of River Tunga for 12 years where He has installed the Goddess Sri Sharadamba, the residing deity of Sringeri, Sri Adi Shankaracharya wrote many Stotras and Prakrana Granthas. Among His works, Prasthana Treya is considered as one of the best, but it is not suitable for a layman. Hence He has penned the simple Prakarana Grantha called 'Svatma Nirupanam' for the easy understanding of a common man.

This small Treatise Svatma Nirupanam contains 154 verses; each having two lines. It begins with the adoration of the Guru and an enumeration of the qualifications required for the disciple. For the first 103 verses, the subject deals with Guru's Teachings and the remaining are Sishya's experiences. The author has explained the Mahavakya 'Tattvamasi' in statements irrefutable for their logic with the help of illustrations.

This book, which is translated in English by Sri Jnanananda Bharati Swamiji, was initially printed by our 'Vani Vilas' press in the year 1968. Under the directions of Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji, the ruling Pontiff of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, we are bringing out this book and I am sure this book will be very much useful for an ordinary man who is a beginner of Vedantic path and wants to lead a spiritual life.

I convey the benign Blessings of the Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji for all those who have contributed to bring out this book.
