PREFACE
The main reason for writing this book on Symbolism in Sri Aurobindo's Savitri is my fascination with the spiritual life. Although I had never believed in God in my early life because I was a communist and had a scientific attitude towards life. During those days, I hated religious people and criticised their fundamental activities. Fortunately, a self enlightened Tantrik Dr. Anand Kumar Singh came into my life who had a scientific vision and knowledge of religions and spirituality. He directed me to the Divine path. This changed attitude towards life led me to Sri Aurobindo's Savitri. Savitri is a symbolic presentation of Sri Aurobindo's vast ranging spiritual attainments. There is a constant search going on in Savitri to liberate man from the cage of the materialistic world. In Savitri, Sri Aurobindo says that a human being is not merely made of mind, life, and body but he is a spirit. He has tremendous powers and capacities in him which can be awakened by him through the process of self-enlightenment. Therefore the transformation of human consciousness into supramental consciousness is very necessary to ascend man from the lower hemisphere to the higher hemisphere. Thus Savitri is supramental poetry that opens the gateless gate of the Divine for the entire humanity. This book, therefore, is an endeavour to explore the symbolic significance of Savitri. It is an attempt to unveil and explain the mysticism of Savitri. I've been enormously benefited from the practical knowledge of the Indian culture of my venerable teacher Dr. Achala Sharma, Head, Deptt. Of English, School of Studies, Vikram University, Ujjain. I am deeply indebted to Late Dr. N.J. Oberoi, Dr. Surendra Soni, Dr. Anjana Pandey, Dr. B.K. Anjana, Dr. Rooble Verma, Dr. Naveen Mehta, Dr. Mansoor Khan, Dr. Rajshree Sheth, Dr. Jyoti Vaidhya, Prof. Chandrakanta Tejwani, Prof. Rajshree Sharma, Prof. Sangita Vats, Dr. Ravi Mishra, Dr. Alpana Upadhyaya, and Dr. Zafar Mehmood, who always suggested and guided me to make this endeavour a success. I would like to express my gratitude to Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Banaras Hindu University, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, and Vikram University, Ujjain for granting access to their libraries. I must acknowledge my debt to my parents Late Shri Gomaji Gorasya and Late Smt. Hemibai Gorasya who's loving inspiration and enthusiastic involvement with my growth have always been of great help to me.
