Book Description

Foreword

Through My Open Window is a collection of Runu Barua's Assamese short stories competently translated into English by Maitreyee Barua Das. Runu Barua was a prolific short story writer and a novelist whose popular short stories appeared in Assamese newspapers from the mid-1950s right up to the early years of this century. Her stories are about a land and its people that she knew very well-the old Assam that included quite a few states of the present Northeast and about Arunachal Pradesh. Her stories pivot around small incidents that acquire unexpected significance because of a small twist or turn in ordinary, everyday happenings. Her stories have been so popular because the protagonists and characters are so easy for people to identify with. They also reflect the diversity of our plural society. We have settings and characters that take us to Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya as well. The writer's love of nature is evident in the prominent place she has given to nature in most of her stories. What makes her stories particularly significant is her awareness of the socio-political changes that have drastically changed the very character of our society and contributed to the emergence of a society that is quite a bit different from what it was in the mid-1950s.
