About the Author

Dr. Mrs. Bala Krishnan, a Professor of Sanskrit was born in Trivanduram, Kerala and grew up in a Philosophic religious atmosphere. She had her graduation on Sanskrit and Indian culture from the Kerala University in 1961 and stood first in the University. Her Post-graduation education from Kerala University with samkhya and Vedanta as special subjects, won her the gold medal of the University in 1963. She took her M.Phil degree on Yoga Philosophy from Madras University in 1979 and the doctorate degree in 1982. She worked as a Professor in Meenakshi College Madras Anna Adarsh College Madras, and Wesley College for women Secunderabad. She worked on a project at Delhi and continued her post doctoral research with U.G.C Grant. During the tenure of her profession, She held some honorary offices with great distinction.

Preface

The text Yogamaniprabha is a lucid commentary on the Yogasutras of Patanjali by sri Ramananda Sarasvati who is well known in the history of Advaita Vedanta as the author of the Ratnaprabha - a commentary on sri sankara's bhasya on the Brahma-sutras-s and on the Vivaranopanyasa which is an interpretative exposition of the Pancapadikavi varana of Prakasstmayati.

The edition of the text of the Yogamaniprabha is based on thirteen manuscripts which are as follows:

1. I The Asiatic society of Calcutta Ms. No.G.10935. It is complete. The script is in Devanagari. It is a paper manuscript and is in good condition.

2. II The Asiatic Society of Calcutta Ms. No. G. 990. It begins with the 29th sutra of chapter I. It is in Devanagari. It is a paper manuscript and has numerous omissions. All the sutra-s are enumerated in the beginning. Then, the text commences.
