Preface

Although the prehistoric studies were neglected and remained by and large in isolation till the recent period the basic foundation of such studies was adequately laid down by the geologists in second half of the nineteenth century. Indeed, by the beginning of the twentieth century the prehistoric potential of most of the major areas of the country came to be known, apart from the publications of miscellaneous reports such as those on Mohenjodaro, Chahundaro and Harappa the only important progress in the immediately post - Marshall years seems to be in the domain of pre-history.
