About The Book

This book presents impressive collection of essays on marginal questions related to science, faith, reason, scripture and philosophy in honour of Dr. George Karuvelil SJ. This work is a fitting homage to Dr. George who dared to walk consistently on border questions and formulate its implications for the quest for the Ultimate.

Foreword

To think through issues and concerns and articulate the underlying assumptions and emerging perspectives is the work of a true thinker. That distinguishes him from a routine teacher. For Heidegger poet is one who listens to Being. One could say that a thinker is one who deciphers the arguments and formulates the emerging newness.

Prof. George Karuvelil SJ has been teaching philosophy for many years at JDV, Pune. As a philosopher he dwelt on the domain of reason. Rightly so. The questions of faith however remained with him. He allowed them to intersect and fecund one another. It is faith seeking understanding, distinguishing faith from belief system. The former refers to the quest for the ultimate, while the latter refers to the articulated form of that quest. In that sense, the thrust of fundamental theology to network with philosophical search remained one of the passions of Prof. George.

As part of team teaching, students had occasions to listen to his lectures during our lessons on 'faith and revelation' and 'theology of religions'. On both occasions we were impressed and enlightened by his efforts on eliciting the nuances of faith and reason dialogue. Now we learn that he has elaborated on those questions and ready to publish it in book form for the benefit of many.

Dr. Karimundackal has organized an impressive collection of essays on marginal questions related to science, faith, reason, scripture and philosophy in honour of Prof. George. This is a fitting homage to Prof. George who dared to walk consistently on border questions and formulate its implications for the quest for the Ultimate. I am happy to learn that this volume is a worthy, addition to the already existing collections in 'JDV-Philosophy Series, thanks to the initiative of Prof. Kuruvilla Pandikattu.
