Book Description
The global society has already entered in the 21st century with tremendous challenges and environmental threats. Out of these challenges, management of water resources has emerged as the most dominant and core issue. In the recent years, water management has become one of the prime issues and has appeared in the form of a major challenge not only for the international community but also for the Indian scientists, geo-hydrologists, water resource planners and policy makers. That is why, the current issue has drawn the attention of almost all disciplines and field experts in particular. India has plenty of natural resources and is very rich in its water resources, however, the situation is such that the floods and the droughts co-exist. Consequently, there is a severe problem of water surplus and water deficit. The existing water resources of prime significance are critically depleting day by day, mainly because of over-exploitation. With regard to ground water resources, the situation is quite alarming. In several parts of our country, the rate of depletion of ground water resources is very severe and beyond carrying capacity. If the continuing fall in water table remains unchecked, the hydrological as well as environmental conditions of the concerned areas would worsen. So, keeping in view, the relevance of the issue, especially the extent, magnitude and the critical status of water resources, the current book entitled "Water Resource Management" has been written. In this book relevant research papers have been collected from eminent field experts. All the articles included in the book are entirely research oriented covering mainly the six sub-themes i.e. (i) Status of Water Resources in India; (ii) Prediction of Unguaged Basin (PUB); (iii) Water Surplus-Floods; (iv) Water Scarcity-Droughts; (v) Water Resource Management Policies and Programmes; (vi) Community Participation in Water Resources Management: Water Harvesting etc. However, a few other research papers have also been included in the book. This book will serve as a reference guide for the planners, policy makers and prove very useful for the better management and conservation of water resources.
