Book Description

About The Book

Latin American literature burst into the contemporary scene with a characteristic verb and aplomb. It has established itself as-in all probability-the most remarkable liter ary phenomenon of our times expressed in a foreign idiom and available in translations in countries speaking diverse languages either side of the Atlantic and even beyond. It is in the fitness of things that in our country, which has a rich tradition of culture and which has many similarities with some Latin American regions, an attempt should be made to evaluate a few of the manifestations of that literature after a perusal of its contents in the original with an independent mind without being obsessed by western literacy taste and critical judgement.

Here an effort has been made to highlight some of the most salient literary contributions of the last one hundred years beginning from the important manifestation called "Modernism", which began in the closing years of the nineteenth century, upto and even further than the much publicised "boom".
