About the Book
To live long, healthy and active is the cherished desire of all. One of the major contributions of the outgoing century in Health Sciences is to give us hope of a healthy long life; since it is now recognized that over seventy five per cent of human illness, causing premature deaths, disabilities and sufferings are not due to bad luck' indeed, but due to faulty personal habits and environment and they can be prevented and conquered. This know-ledge gives us the confidence to protect ourselves against the dreaded killers, of heart attacks, high blood pressure, paralytic strokes, diabetes, cancer, the tragic deaths of our children from infections, nutritional disorders, and the doomed adolescents from drugs and addictions. Forty long years of intensive academic, clinical and hospital experiences, convinced the author that the secrets of a long healthy life do not lie in the sophisticated hospitals, medical institutions or magic pills, but in health education to protect themselves and their children from the dreaded diseases.

The twelve chapters of the book present information in common man's language, of the latest advances in medical sciences that tell us how to avoid premature health disasters and ensure a healthy long life.

Preface
Money, power, promotions are nice, but nicer still is a healthy long life with a small healthy family around. The tragedy of the innovative twentieth century has been that while we emerged out of deprivation and unprotected hazards with tremendous material and technological progress, we lost sight of mother nature's protective arms and acquired newer hazards to our survival and health. Today's health problems around the globe are either due to newly acquired affluence and social mores of industrialized society or continuance of primitive socio-environmental scenario of deprivation and death.

Four decades back, we stepped out of imperial chain and began our long march to freedom. After forty years, nation's health falls far short of expectations. Low priority, inadequate understanding of the interface relationship between health and progress, an out dated bureaucratic concept and organization and above all the 'virgin soil' of health illiteracy continue to cast a gloomy horizon. In this battle against disease and death, the first salvo must be fired by us only, the people, who are fortunate to go to school. We must start our own health education programmed, like adult literacy, to help ourselves and to help our unfortunate brethren lingering in the snake pits of ignorance and deprivation.

In this monograph, attempt has been to present complex and technical information of a rapidly expanding medical science in a language of a common man, enabling him to participate in the battle against premature deaths and diseases. Modern science has established that in over 75 per cent of crippling diseases, it is not the ill luck but the man-made evils that cause the misery and this can be avoided. So is the need for education to look after ourselves and the community.

Health is inseparable from the society in which we live. It is therefore equally necessary for us to continually evaluate our social concepts, organization and priority that our government allocates to health care services in the country. At the door step of twenty first century, the new realization is that the care of health of the citizens by the state is not one of welfare alone but a vital, economic programmed of the nation.
