Preface
This is a comprehensive study of History of Ancient Assam (ancient period). The objective of this paper is to give a general outline of the history of Assam from the prehistory to the 13th century occupation of Assam by the Muhammadan in the first quarter of the 13th century. It aims to acquaint the students with major stages of developments in the political, social and cultural history of the state during the most important formative period.

This book has been divided into ten (10) units and each unit also divided into some sub-units. Unit-I explain the Sources: Archaeological, Numismatic, Epigraphy, Literary Sources. Unit-II, discussed the Origin and Antiquity of Ancient Assam, location, origin of the name of Assam. Unit-III; explain Legendary period-Naraka and his successors. Unit-IV, discussed the Ruling Dynasties - Varmana, Salastambha and Pala dynasty. Unit-V discussed the Society of Ancient Assam. Unit-VI discussed the Economy of Ancient Assam, Unit-VII discussed the Religion of Ancient Assam, Unit-VIII discussed the Administration of Ancient Assam, Unit-IX discussed the Language and Literature, and Unit-X discussed the Art and Architecture.
