About the Book Kamandal is the fifth and latest of Deed's collection of poems. Deed showed a lot a promise early in his poetic career starting in 1984. The present collection embodies a fruition of the earlier promise. That Deed is not a coterie poet but one of life in all its fullness is shown by the diversity of themes in the present collection--from the satirical "Foreign Trip......" (beginning "India is Hell") and "The Village Revisited" to the metaphysical "An Evening with Babaji". Deed depicts the fullness of contemporary life (particularly in Punjab) with a rare felicity. His poetry is highly readable because of its depth, its close observation, and, above all, its razor-sharp imagery.

About the Author Jaswant Deed is a notable figure among the select band of post-modern Punjabi poets and short-story writers who have charted new paths. He is neither a crusader nor a proselytizer of any specific ideology, but is, chiefly, a creative analyst of the contemporary experimental reality with all its dilemmas and mutual contradictions. Deed is a poet of deep observation in tandem with a razor-sharp imagery which adds a rare intensity to many of his poems.
