Book Description

Preface

That the foundations of Indian culture were deeply embedded in Dravidian culture is now an incontrovertible fact. Dravidian culture is one the most ancient cultures of the world. Those cultures, slightly contemporaneous to one another, slowly started fading out. However, the primordial Dravidian culture continues to thrive without losing its quintessence despite the apparent change in systems of dress and address.

Dravidian University is established through a Legislature Act by Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1997 with the extended support of Southern States, at Kuppam, a tri-lingual junction in the south western part of Andhra Pradesh, 4 km. away from Karnataka, 8 km. from Tamil Nadu and about 4 hours drive from Kerala, to promote a spiritual integration among the speakers of Dravidian languages, thus building a string path of National Integration and to advance research and studies in Dravidian languages which are about 27 both inside India and outside like Baluchistan and to create a strong awareness of the integrated character of Dravidian Studies, a major branch of Indology.

Besides the research programmes, the University serves the community with several modern. employable and innovative courses of study.

Integration at all levels is the motto of Dravidian University Innovation is its force and strength One of the aims of higher education is to provide social materials with relevance to the society at large and to the Dravidian University in particular. Dravidian University has been striving hard to give such relevancy by publishing various handbooks, compendiums and dictionaries.

Prepositions of English are their scope. The compilers of this work pointed out that the functions of English prepositions centered round two, namely time, place and direction. In other words, every English preposition denotes time and place. Now a question comes to our mind: what is its equivalences in Malayalam? Rather, which grammatical categories, like prepositions in English denote time, space and direction in Malayalam?

In this work, you will find Malayalam case markers and post-positions are equivalent to English prepositions denoting time and special functions of Malayalam language.

After establishing these facts, another question rose in our mind: what is the format (a book or a research paper)? It is decided that the format of a dictionary is the most suitable for this kind of work. It.is suitable because any Malayalam speaker who wishes to know the grammatical functions of English prepositions through his or her mother tongue must know a similar function in the mother tongue.

This dictionary. is a unique one. It is a specialized dictionary (pedagogical) that gives equivalences for English and Malayalam through sentences. Another advantage of this dictionary is the supply of explanatoty equivalences that give meaning or sense of English prepositions.

I commended the author on his work.
