Book Description

Preface

This dictionary presents a collection of Islamic Terms and Names which, in my opinion, are important to the study of Holy Qur’an and Hadith (sayings and tradition of Prophet Muhammad S.A.A.W.).

Arabic words, in bold English, are listed alphabetically and according 10 their pronounciation. The system used in this book for transliteration of these words is listed on page iv. The word in Arabic script is then followed by its exact meaning or an equivalent in the English language, with appropriate references, wherever necessary. Reference books used in the compilation of this work are listed at the end and are recommended for further reading.

This small book has been compiled to satisfy the need of a large number of English reading people, both in this country and abroad, who have become increasingly interested in Islam due to current events, and also due to the fact that it is the only Religion which is Universal and guarantees social, political and economic justice to all human beings, irrespective of their color, race, creed or national origin.

This is a concise dictionary and is not meant to be an encyclopaedia, a biography or a complete reference book on Islam, although it may serve one or all of these purposes in a small way. I pray that may this humble effort also ‘help our Muslim brothers and sisters to read, understand and act upon the teachings of Holy Qur’an as elucidated by the Prophet S.A.A.W. himself, Amin.

I am deeply indebted to my brother in Islam, Mohammad Sa’id El-Dabbas, who, inspite of his multifarious activities, was able to spare some of his precious time and took great pains in revising and enlarging the original manuscript to make it as comprehensive as it is. May Allah bless him, Amin.

Last but not least, I am grateful to all those brothers and sisters, both here and overseas, who have encouraged us with helpful advice and constructive criticism. We are also grateful for their continued material, spiritual and moral support in our long struggle in the Way of Allah. May Allah reward them all accordingly, Amin.

All praises are due to Allah Alone, Who is my source of inspiration and to Whom I shall return.
