Inscriptions of Mewar

Mewar was the first and foremost state which made valiant efforts towards the preservation of its freedom. During the earlier period the mighty Sultans of Malva and Gujrat were its chief adversaries who endeavored time and again to subjugate the land. Later on the Mughals and before them the Truks and the Pathans attacked this land on several occasions. The brave people of Mewar successfully encountered these invasions under the able and determined leadership of the Maharanas who valued and cherished freedom more than their lives. During the later times a treaty was signed with the Mughals which cannot be termed as abject surrender.
The present work bring out the text and purpose of the majority of important inscriptions of Mewar in a single volume for the first time. The texts would provide greater details to the scholars and afford them an opportunity to form their own opinion about certain happenings mentioned in the epigraphs. The gist and purport would go a long way in satisfying the curiosity and need of casual readers.

Born in Mandwa town of Jhunjhanu district in Rajasthan in 1925, Ratanlal Mishra retired from the government service as Deputy Director. Since then he has devoted himself to research and writing work. He has more than Forty books to his credit, in subjects like art, architecture and history. He has been awarded Gold Medal from Rajasthan University together with a number of awards and honours for his achievements in the field of writing. At present he is engaged in preparing a comprehensive historical account of Rajasthan.

The land of Mewar had enjoyed great prosperity in the past together with prestigious state of cultural heritage. Its social and cultural development touched new heights while trade and commerce flourished during the peaceful reign of the Maharanas. This land is very rich in various types of monuments such as temples, tanks, inns, palaces, forts, Cenotaphs, tombs and mosques. The people in whose names these philanthophic activities were conducted put some account of their forefathers, rulers and themselves on these monuments. These inscriptions provide very valuable information about the achievements of the rulers and indirectly supply information about social, economic, cultural and religious life of the people. In this way these inscriptions prove veritable store house of information and a potential primary source of history of the region. These inscriptions lie scattered all over the land. During the past decades devoted scholars discovered them, deciphered them and preserved them. Some of them are preserved in Ajmer and Udaipur Museums while others are still affixed to the various types of monuments. Some are in good state of preservation while others are not so well preserved. All of these inscriptions have still not been deciphered by the scholars. The texts and translations of some of these inscriptions are found in various works while the purports of some are found in many historical books and journals and megazines.
