‘Ayurveda’ is a system of medicine handed down to us by our ancient Rsis-Caraka and Dhanvantri. Its scope is wide enough to cover bodily ailments as well as mental illness. Its origin lies in Atharvaveda containing chapters on medicines, charms, attributes of herbs and plants with therapeutic properties. Elements of surgery were also known in the Vedic times. The Vedas in general contain invocation to Brahma and the other gods for a soul, body and mind for life span as long as hundred years.
