About the Book

MIRA BAI (1949-1547) was the famous saint-singer of Rajasthan, whose life is become a legend of devotion of Krishna. Her lyrical compositions are a household treasure and many great musicians in India have sung them and continue to sing them. Their language is simple and direct to a mixed dialect of Braj Bhasha and Marwari. Their lyrical rapture and passionate sincerity have charmed millions of hearts for many centuries. Mira Bai belongs to the great galaxy of medieval saint-poets and spiritual lyricists like Surdas and Vidyapati. Thought born in a royal family, she voluntarily renounced hyer queenly position and wandered with the mendicants and went on a pilgrimage to Dwarka. She is equally honoured and celebrated as a poetess in Gujarati medieval literature. In this volume her life and work are introduced along with the translations of fifty select poems. The translator has done her best to keep the original charm and flavour of the lyrics in these close translations.
