Nepal Earthquake

Foreword Taken in by the apparent sturdiness of the world, we lose sight of the fact that life is, in truth, fragile. Nepal Earthquake reminds us of this fragility, turning our attention back to a time when the earth shook, leaving a trail of rubble and grief in Nepal.

This book serves as a valuable memory project for a society prone to forgetfulness. In his photographs and in his journal from the aftermath of the April 2015 earthquake, Kevin Bubriski invites us to remember all the lives the earthquake took, and all of the dreams it disrupted: everyday dreams of nourishment, shelter, clothing Community, Healthcare. Preface I did not arrive in Kathmandu until early June 2015, more than four weeks after the 25 April earthquake. It was a journey of choice back to Nepal and would have been weeks earlier except for my teaching responsibilities as a college professor of photography and documentary studies.

I had last been in Kathmandu in January for the launch of my book, Nepal: 1975-2011, a 36-year retrospective of images. My trip to Nepal in June was to see for myself old friends of years ago and to bring my camera to witness what had changed of a place and people familiar to me over the past 40 years.
