Book Description

Preface

Ayurveda has rightly emphasized that health is the state of normalcy of Dosha, Dathu, Agni and Malakriya. It also includes Prasanna Atma (soul), Indriya (sense organs) and Manas (mind).

Three doshas of the body, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which broadly represent the nervous system, the metabolic system and the nutritive system, keep the human body in balance. Whenever the delicate balance between these doshas is disturbed, a disease may be manifested. The main objective of the Panchakarma treatment is to restore the original state of equilibrium between the doshas so that diseases will not recur. In order to achieve the same Ayurveda has advocated certain regimens and treatment modalities such as Dinacharya, Rutucharya, Vega Adharana, Rasayana-Vajikarana and Panchakarma in order to prevent diseases.

The complete process of Panchakarma consists of three steps.

The preparatory procedure consists of two main processes - Snehan (oleation) and Swedan (fomentation). These methods help to dislodge the accumulated poisonous substances in the body, thus preparing them for their complete removal. Pradhan Karma or the main procedure. ie., administering of vamana, virechana, asthapana, anuvasana and nasya karma.

These five procedures meant for internal purification of the body through the nearest possible route. Such purification allows the biological system to return to homeostasis and to rejuvenate rapidly and also facilities the desired pharmacokinetic effect of medicines administered there after. Panchakarma provides a comprehensive therapy role as a promoter, preventive, curative & rehabilitative procedure. This book explains practical methodology of Panchakarmas including popular Keraliya panchakarma. Formulations used in panchakarma are explained with its ingredients helps the practitioner familiar with its mechanism of action. Guidelines are given to practitioners so as to select appropriate panchakarma therapies in a given clinical condition. I am thankful to Sachin Gupta Chowkhamba Sanskrit series office, Varanasi for accepting to publish the book.
