Sarvajna Singa Bhupala- Makers of Indian Literature

Sarvajña Singa Bhupala : Sarvajña Singa Bhupala was a great scholar and a noble ruler. The author of Rasaraavasudhakara had a title Sarvajña, hence mentioned as Sarvajña Singa Bhupala and as Singa Bhupala. His capital was Rajachala the Telugu term of which is Rachakonda. He himself was a great scholar and was a great patron of poets. The well known Telugu poet Srinathakavisarvabhauma adorned his court. The King because of his manifold talent was eulogised by the scholars as Sarvajña. The great poet and rhetorician Viśveśvara pandita and scholar Appacharya flourished in his court. The camatkaracandrika of Viśveśvara Pandita provides information about the heroic deeds and literary skills of Sarvajña. Thus Sarvajña Singa Bhūpāla himself is an alamkara to the Alankaraśāstra and a matter of pride to Bharatadeśa.

P. Shashirekha : Professor (Retired) from Osmania University, Telangana is a student of Osmania University. She has pursued her studies M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. under the noble guidance of Dr. P. Sriramachandrudu, a versatile scholar of Sanskrit. Though her field of specialisation is Kautilya's Arthaśāstra and Smṛsties, she got acquainted with Alamkara and Vedantaśāstras by studying under her guru P. Sriramachandrudu. She has authored ten books (English and Telugu) on Administration, Law, Vedānta/Sankhya / Alaṁnkāras and Literature. She has received an Award Ramakrishna Sanskrit Award 2000 by Canadian Foundation. She has served the department as Head of the department and also as the Chairman, Board of Studies in Sanskrit.

'Sarvajñasingabhūpala' is a luminary in the galaxy of Alankarikas whose contribution 'Rasarṇavasudhakara' is a moon showering moon light in the world of Sahrdayas. Hailing from Telugudeśa he was a great king poet under whose patronage flourished poets like Srinatha Kavisarvabhauma. The 'Rasarṇavasudhakara' deals with each component of 'Rasatheory' and explains it in such a way that any student of 'Alankarasāstra' can easily understand it. Many technical words of Alankarastra are explained in this treatise with suitable illustrations.

Present monograph focuses on important topics of Rasatheory discussed in Ras ārṇavasudhakara. 'Rasarṇavasudhakara' edited by Sri T. Venkatacharya has been useful in bringing out this monograph. The editor has provided a lot of historical data about the author and the work. The study of this magnum opus of Singabhūpāla takes a Sahrdaya to a 'Rasamayajagat'. But neither English translation nor Telugu translation of this work was available to me. However, the style and the arrangement of topics have inspired me to proceed. While going through the work it is felt that 'Rasārṇavasudhakara' has thrown its light on the main branches of Indian theatre particularly with reference to performance (Abhinaya).
