After earning his PhD in Philosophy in 1929, Anand began writing for T. S. Eliot's magazine \u003ci\u003eCriterion\u003c\/i\u003e as well as books on cooking and art. Recognition came with the publication of his first two novels, \u003ci\u003eUntouchable\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eCoolie. \u003c\/i\u003e These were followed by a succession of novels, including his well-known trilogy \u003ci\u003eThe Village\u003c\/i\u003e (1939), \u003ci\u003eAcross the Black Waters\u003c\/i\u003e (1940) and \u003ci\u003eThe Sword and the Sickle\u003c\/i\u003e (1942).
