About The Book

This present edition of 'The Srimad Devi Bhagavatam' is the complete and unabridged version of Swami Vijnanananda's landmark translation and has been re-designed only with the main objective of providing a dear printed text fot a better reading experience. This English translation has rare insights into this sacred ancient text.

The book consists of twelve sections with numerous chapters. The Srimad Devi Bhagavatam and Devi Mahatmya are one of the most important works in Shaktism, a tradition which worships 'Devi' as the creator of the Universe.

While the present edition is essential for the students, researchers and teachers of Sanskrit, Hinduism and Indian philosophy, it is equally useful for the general readers interested in understanding the Puranas, Tantra and Saktism.

Swami Vijnanananda was a well known Sanskrit scholar, known for his translations of various important Sanskrit texts. He became the President of Ramakrishna Mission in 1937 and under his presidency and direct supervision, Sri Ramakrishna Temple was built at Belur Math.

Foreword

What the Srimad Devi Bhagavatam is to the Vaisnavas, the Devi Bhagavatam is to the Saktas, The question of the priority of the two Bhagavatas has been often discussed more in the spirit of partisans rather than that of sober scholars. We reserve our opinion on the subject till the publication of the complete translation of this work.

This translation has been inscribed to the sacred memory of my friend the late Rai Bahadur Sris Chandra Vidyarnava who induced me to undertake the translation of this work. He had thoroughly read the two Bhagavatas and it was his opinion that the priority of composition belonged to the Devi Bhagavatam. The other Bhagavat, according to him, is a modern compilation attributed to Bopadeva-the author of Mugdhabodha Vyakaranam.
