Book Description
THIS book is intended to form one of the series which already includes "Things Chinese," by Dr J. D. Ball, and "Things Japanese," by Professor B. H. Chamberlain. The selection of subjects for treatment and the form of the present book naturally differ from those of its pre decessors. India is much better known to the English reader than either China or Japan, and there is a large library of works on special questions connected with the country and people, not to speak of encyclopædias like the "Imperial Gazetteer." Hence it has not been con sidered advisable to discuss at length the history, religion, literature, geography, geology, or natural history of the Empire, subjects which cannot be dealt with in a satis factory way within the limits of short articles. It has been my object to search in the by-ways of Anglo-Indian literature, and discuss some of the quaint and curious matters connected with the country which are not specially considered in the ordinary books of reference.
