The United Nations (1945-1995)

Books are the carriers of civilization. Without Books history is silent, literature dumb, Science crippled thought and speculation at a standstill. They are engines of change, windows on the world, light houses errected in a sea of time"- Barbara Tuchman. Fifty years ago, in a bold affirmation of international co-operation, a new organization explicitly mandated to advance peace, human rights, international justice and economic and social development was created. The United Nations was conceived as an institution, that would bring together the countries of the world to work for the progress of all nations and all peoples, as the best way to ensure lasting peace. Since its establishment on 24th October 1945, the UN has faced many challenges.
