About the Book:

BHABANI BHATTACHARYA (1906-1988), One of India's foremost writers fiction, is an increasingly recognized figure in India and the west. Born in Bhagalpur, he started his writing career with Mouchak in Bengali. After doing his B.A., he sailed to England for further studies. From 1929 he began writing for British Periodicals including the Manchester Guardian and The Spectator. It was Yeats Brown, Who urged Bhattacharya to concentrate on Writing in English. His English translation of Tagore's poems The Golden Boat was published in 1930. During the period, he traveled extensively in Europe. He returned to India in 1934 and turned to journalism. In 1947, So Many Hungers was published. Music for Mohini, one of his best works, was published in 1952 and in 1966 shadow form Ladakh, which received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967. Bhattacharya's achievement as a novelist has had purposeful thrust relevant to the India of today.

About the Author:

SHANTINATH K. DESAI (B.1929) did his M.A. (1953) and Ph.D. (1963) from Bombay University and P.G. Diploma (1959)form Leeds. He was Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University in Karnataka. His first publication was a collection of short stories entitled Manjugadde published in 1959. In 1961 his first novel Mukti (Rademption) was published. It was acclaimed as a remarkable novel depicting modern sensibility. His second Novel depicting modern sensibility. His second novel Vikshepa was published in 1977. Since then he has published Kelavu Ayda Kathegalu, a collection of selected stories, Srishti, a novel, and Sahitya Mattu Bhashe, a literary criticism. Prof. Desai has edited a number of works in English.
