Book Description

Foreword
Anthropological Survey of India has a long tradition of indepth study of a particular tribe staying with them for a long period. Initialy the object was to grasp the cultural forms, the pattern of interaction between various groups and the process of socio-cultural change. The emphasis was to study the group as a part of Indian civilization. With the change of time, the emphasis was shifted to know to what extent the people have adapted themselves with the changing scenario. The present ethnographic study of the Chakmas of Tripura by Dr. S.R. Maitra is a continuation of this trend.

Preface
The present project was initially launched in the year 1976 while I was stationed at Head Quarters. I am highly indebted to Dr. N.C. Chaudhury, the then acting Director for kindly approving my scheme. I was transferred to South India Station by the end of 1976 and entrusted with national project within the jurisdiction of the station. On completion of the project I submitted a preliminary report "The Chakma of Tripura" and requested the then Director Shri H.N. Rakshit through the Regional Officer Dr. P. K. Misra to permit me for a second phase of field work to build up a comprehensive monograph on the Chakma of Tripura and they have kindly consented. I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. A.K. Danda, Director for kindly providing me necessary time for the write up and feeding me with his valued suggestion and advise for the preparation of this volume. I am grateful to Dr. S. G. Morab for kindly going through my manuscript maticulously and suggesting the needful. I am also thankful to Sarvasri Mohinimohan Chakma, Anantamohan Chakma, Niranjan Chakma and Lalit Mohon Chakma for their gratutious help and co- operation during my field visit.
