Book Description
The number of popular science books in particularly on natural history of plants is few. 'Green Sketches' is an effort to fulfil this deficiency to some extent. All total fourteen plants around us are illustrated with lucid language, sufficient photographs and diagrams, in this first attempt. The author has preferred comparatively comprehensive words in place of technical terminology, as possible. This book will be very helpful all along with the students of high schools and colleges; the academicians, the researchers and among the common readers too.
Dipanjan Ghosh (b. 29th October, 1973) is a well-known popular science writer from Bardhaman, West Bengal. He specialises mainly on writing of research papers, scientific articles and features covering vast fields like plant sciences, biodiversity, wildlife conservation, fossil biology, biochemistry, food science and environmental issues. Apart from that he is a traveller, a radio-talker, a science communicator, and an editor as well, apart from his professional life as a teacher of botany. He loves to call him as a 'nature lover' and believes himself as a 'student of science'.
India is quite rich in biodiversity; both in floral or plant and faunal or animal diversity. Among plants, around 17000 species are angiosperms. However, between flora and fauna, most of us show a preference for the animal kingdom, even if the floral world is more attractive because of its colourful variations.
As an Indian, I feel that we are not conscious enough about the diverse plants that exist all around us. The basic reason behind this perhaps is that we were not introduced to their glory as a student; nor did we discover the beauty of plants as a nature lover. A contributory reason is that, the number of popular science books in particularly on Botany is few. Those books that are available are outdated as modern scientific explorations have advanced greatly in the last three or four decades. The age-old books have not gone through any revision;many are exclusive and most the students do not have easy access to them.
