Literature Within/Across Walls - Comparative Studies in Classical and Modern Tamil Literature

Foreword Professor Kasi Chellappan is well-known for his work on comparative literature, and this volume brings together his most important studies in this field. Along with comparative studies of writing within India, we find comparisons of features of Indian and European literature, including the work of Subramanian Bharati and Rabindranath Tagore. Such comparisons of creations from different literary backgrounds involve a consideration of the issue of translation and this topic is examined in depth, with interesting discussions of transcription and trans coding. There is some focus on Tamil literature both classical and modern. In one essay John Keats and Subramanian Bharati are brought together, in another Percy By her Shelley, Bharati and Bharatidasan. Further back in time, there is a comparison of the writing of William Shakespeare and the classical Tamil writer on ethics, Thiruvalluvar.
