Book Description

About The Book

Maharshi Devendranath Tagore's (1817-1905) literary contributions in Bengali were rather incidental, in the sense that they were the result of his effort at exposition of his religious beliefs in well-chosen language and in a systematic manner. He was the direct inheritor of the legacy of Rammohun. Chronologically he was the link between the age of the Raja and the land of religious leaders who appeared during the subsequent periods. To take up consideration of the merits of his literary output will automatically land us in the area of his spiritual journeyings. Of all his writings, his Atmajivani was admittedly the best. His Brahmo Dharmer Byakhyan indicates its nature from its name itself. His was a quest for realization in this very life of some eternal verities of which the rishis of old had spoken in Upanishads and other Sanskrit texts and his literature was essentially a retelling of the story of that search.
