Major Religious Traditions in India: An Introduction

Preface Religion regulates the behaviour of every human in imparting the claims about the ultimate and instilling visions which apparently shape the socio-cultural constructions and religious experience of the community. As people perceive and express their religious traditions, there may be variation in experience and expression, however, religion can be meaningful when one enhances appreciation of the other.

Very often, religion has emerged as a major source of conflict across the globe. Ideological strife or exclusive claims in radical ways can sprout violence and communal tension as people are misguided when religious teachings overlook the spiritual values. When religion attempts to preserve their identity by utilizing militancy as a means, claiming themselves as custodians of Truth and asserting themselves as the restorer of glorious future, then religions becomes a tool to divide instead of uniting people. In an era of multi socio-cultural-religious context, the system of compartmentalization or self-containment need to be re-examined. The present context can ponder on the question 'How' the multi religious experience can enrich the lives of the other so that religion becomes meaningful in the faith journey.
